Well, its been more than two weeks since my last post about FUDCon. I figure its high time I posted something about what’s been going on in my neck of the woods. Things have been quite busy and are bound to continue at this phrenetic pace for a bit longer.
DarkIce - Audio Streaming
I’ve been working this past week on getting darkice packaged for Fedora. Darkice is a front end audio recording tool for streaming servers like Icecast. I much prefer it over ices and any other streaming client I’ve tried. It does have bits for mp3/mp2/faac as well as ogg/vorbis, so I’ll be packaging it for only the latter.
It seems rpmbuild is a bit more cryptic from my last foray into building RPMs and I have to hunt a little harder for the libs and the binaries. Its coming along nicely, now that I have my virtual machine back in place. I’m also hoping that darkice will be easy to integrate into Fedora Talk as I’ve never dealt with the asterisk end before.
Utah Open Source Conference
This past weekend, we spent a good bit of time reviewing and selecting presentations for the Utah Open Source Conference. I am the head organizer and founder of this all volunteer conference. In fact, our very own FPL, Paul Frields will be keynoting on Thursday evening. Keep an eye on this blog for future updates about the conference.
A New Interest
I’ve recently started to see someone of the female persuasion. Many of my friends have met her, and I’m guessing they like her as I do (well, not quite as much). Here’s hoping things go well with Jennifer
There’s more here, and I’ll try to be more vocal about it as I think its good to share.
Cheers,
Herlo
Last week, we announced that Jayce^ Hall will be on couchcast.org. Well that day is today, so come and listen to him and the couchcast crew as they discuss who will be at the Utah Open Source Conference 2008.
Here’s the details again just in case you missed them the first time:
When: July 7, 2008 12pm MDT (Today)
Where: http://couchcast.org
See you all there!
So I am sitting in my hotel in Los Angeles, preparing to head back to Utah, its 2:37am PDT and I have been meaning to post the rest of my experience at FUDCon. First off, I’d like to thank Mo and Ray for letting me stay at their home with them. They were great hosts! I’d also like to re-thank Max and Paul and the FedoraProject for sponsoring me out to Boston on such short notice. I still feel grateful to be part of such a great community!
FUDCon F10, for me, was a time of realization. Understanding what it is to get involved in projects that scratch that itch. For providing services toward something I’m good at, into a larger community who could really take advantage of that service. And while I am still feeling my way through the Fedora world, I think a few things are clearer now after reflecting on this last FUDCon.
I want to record and stream audio and video.
I’m thinking that along with the Fedora Talk project, I could configure and use tools to provide a non-interactive streaming server for certain events/presentations. What I am thinking of here is things like FUDCon keynotes and sessions. In fact, I plan to purchase a higher quality microphone / mixer combo to better record the audio at the source.
Video and screencasting in real-time seems a bit more of a challenge. Putting that together with the streaming audio seems like a fun project and scratches several itches I’ve been experiencing lately.
I need to learn how build better RPMs
Spot taught a great session at FUDCon F9 in Raleigh about RPM packaging, and Rex Deiter talked this time about becoming a package maintainer. I’ve got a few packages that I’d like to get into the fedora tree, and I think by the end of this year, that can happen. I’m okay at packaging, but haven’t ever submitted a spec file to spot. While I’m nervous about how ugly the first package will look, I’m also excited at the prospect of learning better and more efficient ways of building useful tools for the masses.
I think everyone should build their own spin of Fedora
After the 5+ hour session on Friday’s hackfest regarding the spins website and what the spins SIG has already accomplished, I’ve taken some initiative and started to create content to help the prospective spin enthusiast. I’m a big fan of the Eee PC and am looking forward to purchasing the 901 in the winter. Until then, I’m planning on helping improve the spin process so we don’t fail to release spins again. The custom and official spins ‘built with Fedora’ can be so much more prolific if we just provide the right tools to build a spin. It really should be nothing more than, here’s my kickstart, build me an iso. This would of course have to follow the general standards for acceptable software.
The relationships (FUDBuddies) made at FUDCon are up my alley
I met Rex Dieter, Mo Duffy, Ray Strode, Dennis Gilmore and Ian Weller this time. We had great conversations about the world and of course Fedora. I also got to talk more to Toshio, Greg and J5 who I had met previously at FUDCon F9. I indeed learned a bunch from Toshio about TurboGears too. Its something I’ll treasure for releases to come.
To end this post, I’ve got some audio of the olpc session and paul’s keynote, as well as some photos I’ve posted around the interweb, enjoy. Paul’s keynote will also be up on our new FedoraTV Miro channel, check it out!
Cheers,
Clint
This week’s Local User Group meetings:
A special thanks goes out to TierFour for the streaming and podcast bandwidth to share these meetings. Please feel free to join the streaming discussion this week for the Ubuntu Utah meeting at http://stream.utos.org
As part of the Utah Open Source goals to help every LUG (Local User Group) grow, UTOSF plans to provide timely reminders to all who are interested about when, where and the topic for each of the LUGs we track.
In addition to this feature, UTOSF will also be providing an announcement service for podcasts of LUG meetings that were streamed and recorded.
This service should start around the beginning of February 2008 and hopefully provide simple, yet easy to read posts with all of the details needed.
If your group is not listed on the current UTOSF Groups page, or want your meetings streamed and recorded, please leave a comment, or contact clint At utosf (dot) org and we’ll get it added.
Cheers,
Clint Savage
The Utah Open Source Foundation would like to announce the availability of a new podcast available for meetings that have been recently streamed/recorded. They’re available at http://podcast.utosf.org. These presentations are available from many of the LUGs around the state. Check them out…

Andrew McNabb will be presenting on git, Linus’ favorite VCS. This topic is of heavy debate in many circles in Utah’s Open Source community. If you are a programmer, systems administrator, or just curious about what cool things Linux can do, don’t miss this meeting.
Information can be found on the BYU-UUG website, this is looking like quite an enlightening discussion of version control systems. We hope you’ll attend, either in person, or if you aren’t able to come, by live stream and irc.
See you all there.
Cheers,
Clint Savage
The Provo Linux User Group (PLUG) is hosting the Utah Open Source Foundation this Wednesday, November 14. The presentation will cover the current state of Open Source in Utah. Among the gems will be free food, giveaways, and UTOSF will be announcing its plans for the upcoming year, including some cool surprises. Omniture will be hosting this meeting and all of the details are on the PLUG website.
We look forward to sharing the current and future of Open Source in Utah and hope you’ll join us either in person, or if you aren’t able to come by, try the live stream and irc.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. We here at the Utah Open Source Foundation would like to announce that we’ve recently been able to acquire and test the video from the Utah Open Source Conference (UTOSC).
We’re proud to announce our first video. Tons of work went into getting this live. Including streaming bandwidth provided by TierFour and video editing done by KnowledgeBlue and Open Source TV. We’d like to thank all of those who made this possible and look forward to providing you with additional videos as they arrive. Please feel free to download them or watch the stream.
In the future, we’ll work on making them downloadable from this site as well. Oh, and we’re working on part 1, it will be out soon.
Podcast currently unavailable due to a bug in the PodPress software. Currently looking for a new plugin or an alternate way to release the videos.

This month, we’ll begin our newsletter. UTOSF plans to send out this newsletter to all of the user group (UG) communities in Utah and surrounding areas. We post it here for your benefit and invite you to sign up for the News mailing list at http://utos.org/mailman/listinfo/ to receive this and other news.
In the future, UTOSF plans to make this a regular article released near the end of every month, so come by and see how we’re improving our community.
The Utah Open Source Planet, run by Gabriel Gunderson can be accessed in another way, from Utah Open Source Foundation. Point your browser to http://planet.utosf.org and receive the latest and greatest local Utah bloggers talking about everything from linux to food to programming to weight loss. These people are part of Utah Open Source and have a good nose for what’s going on in tech and open source in Utah. Please join us by participating in Utah Open Source Planet. Its a great blog community.
UTOSF is proud to announce that we will provide streamed user group (UG) meetings. Utah Open Source Foundation (UTOSF) is spearheading an effort to get a streaming server up and running. We’ve taken into considerations things like bandwidth concerns, server power, usefulness of topic and much more. As such, we’ll be attempting to stream more and more meetings, events and other discussions this year for the UGs. The current plan is to cover most of the known user groups (UGs) by end of year 2008.
We need help from you to accomplish this. UTOSF is providing the hardware, bandwidth and configuration for anyone who’s willing to record their UG meeting. We want to find people who are regulars in each of the communities and help them set up the recording software. If you are interested, please contact clint@utos.org or jayce@utos.org for more information.
We’re still learning here, so please bear with us. We’ve had a lot of requests regarding when the recordings of UTOSC 2007 will be released. I’d like to say that I have *actually* seen one and OpenSourceTV and KnowledgeBlue are doing a great job getting these together. I’m excited to see how the rest turn out. The videos will be released as we get them. There will be regular announcements on http://utosf.org so continue to watch for updates.
Only once in a great while will we see an event like this one. Only once will there be so many shiny new distributions to choose from. Only once will OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, OpenBSD and Fedora be released within one month of each other. Because of this The Utah Open Source Foundation is announcing the first and probably the only Multi-Distro Release Party in Utah. The release party will involve four major distros, plus anyone is welcome to bring their own distro to hand out.
The party will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 1-5pm at the Open Source Technology Center at Novell. We’ll have a few short presentations about the three released distributions, food and a large network install server for the Installfest. We hope to see you all there!
Where: Open Source Technology Center at Novell
Map: http://tinyurl.com/yprnqr
When: Saturday, November 10, 2007 1pm-5pm MST
What: Installfest, pizza, drinks and more.
I’d like to invite those interested in helping the Utah Open Source Conference 2008 to start attending the upcoming Conference planning meetings. Reply with the subject “Conference Planning” if you are interested in helping.
In addition, the Utah Open Source Foundation will begin regular “meets”. We’re planning on inviting leadership of each of the UGs, plus anyone interested in helping the community as a whole. UTOSF is dedicated to helping the groups by providing resources, tools and other benefits. Come and be a part of something great!
Cheers,
Clint Savage
The audio went well except the first 2 minutes. The streaming failed miserably at the beginning and luckily I had a back up server. After that, everything seemed to work just fine. I hope you all enjoyed the presentation. If you didn’t get a chance to listen, its available right here on our website. Just click the link below and enjoy!
BYU Unix User Group (BYU-UUG) - OpenLDAP - Michael Torrie
Cheers,
Clint
The meeting this Thursday evening at BYU-UUG given by Michael Torrie on OpenLDAP seems exciting. To me, this sounds like an amazing topic, and because of this, we at Utah Open Source would like to share it with you. And thus, we’ll be streaming our second user group meeting in as many weeks.
To listen to the stream, go to http://stream.utosf.org, right near the presentation will be links to get to the appropriate stream. This should be set up around 7:15pm, the actually meeting starts at approximately 7:30pm. You’ll hear intro music at first, and then the stream will start when the meeting starts.
We’ll also be making available the irc channel #utos-meeting on irc.freenode.net for questions and comments. There will be a moderator watching and will pose questions to Michael as requested. If you are not familiar with IRC, you can join by following the tutorial here.
For those of you who have to watch the kids, or go to some social event and would rather come to this, this is a great opportunity to still participate in the meet. Proving the live stream is something Utah Open Source Foundation plans to do at least once per month for now, and will be helping the groups enable this feature themselves.
In addition, the recording will immediately be available right here on utosf.org for download. If you are unable to listen during the meet, come back here tomorrow night after the meeting and you can download the ogg version of the file.
We hope to see many in there in person, and are excited to provide this capability for those who cannot come.
Cheers,
Clint Savage

Southern Utah Unix User Group (SU3G) - What is Utah Open Source?
Cheers,
Clint
Hi all,
I’d like to make a quick mention of this in case you missed my presentation at UTOSC. I’ll be doing a similar presentation entitled “What is Utah Open Source?”, tonight at 7pm at the Southern Utah Unix User Group (SU3G). In addition, I’ll be providing a tutorial on how to setup VSFTPD if there is time.
I’m sure many of you in Utah, Davis, Weber or Salt Lake Counties might think, “heh, I can’t make it!”. Well that might be true of the past meetings for User Groups. From now on, Utah Open Source will be working to provide live streaming to any User Group that would like to share their meetings.
Currently, we’re in a testing mode, but you’re welcome to listen live tonight at 7pm. There will be a link provided at http://herlo.org:8081 which can be streamed to your favorite media player that supports ogg/vorbis. I use rhythmbox for this, but I know many other players support these live streams as well.
In addition, join the #utos channel on irc.freenode.net if you’d like to ask questions. Someone will be in irc relaying any questions. If you aren’t familiar with irc or how to connect, here’s an easy tutorial.
Now there is no excuse to miss this meeting. If you want to listen, set aside the time, or play the ogg later as it will be available on this site shortly after the presentation. See you all at 7pm tonight!
Cheers,
Clint Savage
