» UTOSC 2008: Google your way to a meal and a good night’s sleep

A few days ago, we mentioned the Dining and Lodging information that has been posted on the 2008 Utah Open Source Conference website for those looking for suggestions for where to crash and/or where to refuel while you’re attending the conference this month.

Thanks to Paul Frields, Fedora Project Leader, we now have an additional resource: A Google Maps page which highlights  hotels, restaurants, and other notable locations around the conference. As if that wasn’t enough, the Google Maps application allows collaboration from multiple individuals which means if you know of a restaurant or hotel worth recommending to other people who are coming to the conference, you can add it to the map for others to see. Amazing!

About this conference thing

The 2008 Utah Open Source Conference is the second annual gathering of open source enthusiasts in Utah. Following the amazingly successful first conference held in 2007 at Novell’s Open Source Technology Center in Provo, UT, this year’s conference is being held on the Redwood campus of Salt Lake Community College near Salt Lake City.

For more information about this conference, to register to attend, or to see a really neat website driven by open source software, go over to <http://2008.utosc.com/>.

» Weird illness

This last weekend, I came down with some kind of weird sickness. I woke up Saturday morning, showered, got dressed, and was about to eat a bowl of cereal when I suddenly felt very fatigued. I ate my cereal and then layed down and fell asleep. A couple hours later, I woke up and had a salad Christine made for me. The salad wasn’t very appetizing (it should have been) and I was again very tired, so I went back to sleep. I slept most of the rest of the day, only getting up for short amounts of time and then resuming my slumber.

Sunday morning, I woke up, showered, and went back to bed. I slept until about 2 in the afternoon. When I got up then, I finally felt I had some energy and I’ve been up ever since (blogging like mad, by the looks of it.)

My two daughters have had these one-day stomach “flu” things this last week, but my sickness didn’t seem to be gastrointenstinal. It just seemed to be more... just tired. I had a headache that seemed to be worse when I moved around, but no fever and no distinct pain anywhere else in my body. Very odd.

Hopefully it’s past and I can resume normal life.

» Being “off-the-road” has its challenges

I will be home for the entire week next week, which is the first time that’s happened this month. Not that I am complaining, but once I get home I have a very long laundry list of items to complete and only 6.5 days to complete it in until I go back on the road. So here’s the short list:

  • Generic stuff that can be done anytime during the week
    • Laundry from the past week
    • Put my bed together at my new home - I have been in this house now for two months, still no real bed
    • Finish unpacking all of the boxes left under the stairs - working on not being a packrat so much of the stuff is bound to get tossed out
    • Put an ad in the paper for a roommate - save money this way
    • Work on the Fedora GI Guide
  • CodeAway Saturday from noon to 6pm - good times
  • UTOSF HackNight Saturday night, 7pm - more good times (gotta get call for papers out)
  • Sleep in all day Sunday - my only real day of rest, but that’s the life I lead, this may lead a little into Monday as well
  • BoardGames on Tuesday night with friends I’ve not seen for a couple months - that’ll be nice
  • Lunch with my friend Tristan on Wednesday afternoon
  • Two meetings Wednesday night at Applebees in Draper
    • Centralized Calendaring among multiple communities - 6p
    • UTOSC Planning Meeting - 8p
  • Two events as well on Thursday I’d like to attend
  • Friday will bring something, but currently, there’s nothing. Maybe I’ll try to keep it free.
  • Oh, and I still have to work on Thursday and Friday, so I guess I’ll work that in somehow as well

Whew! I’m excited to be home though, and am sure this list will grow!

Cheers,

Herlo
